Professional orthodontics have come a long way since their conception in the early 20th century. Braces have become increasingly customizable for a wide variety of patient cases, some more complex than others. While traditional braces work well to remove gaps and spaces between teeth, as well as fix poor bites, not all patients need to address health problems. In fact, many are more concerned with their smile’s appearance.
For this reason, your dentist offers Six Month Smiles in Framingham. Keep reading to learn how they compare.
Six Month Smiles is an accelerated orthodontic method specifically for teeth that are visible in your smile. Instead of wearing brackets and wires for the typical 18 to 24 months with traditional braces, patients can expect results in approximately six months. While this treatment can vary, the method is intended for patients more concerned about their appearance, especially if they’re older and/or only have minor to moderate issues in their smile.
Six Month Smiles is an ideal treatment for many types of issues, including:
The process is very similar to traditional braces because it gently pushes teeth into a more aligned position over time. After completing a consultation with your dentist, they’ll take X-rays, intraoral and facial photographs, and impressions of your teeth to create models fabricated offsite. If eligible for treatment, the dentist will use the models to calculate the movements needed to fix your issue, as well as create clear brackets and tooth-colored wires.
Once created, you’ll come back for a second appointment to have your brackets bonded, which come in a custom-fabricated tray so your dentist can place them exactly where needed. Then, she’ll bond them using a hardening light, followed by threading the arch wire through each bracket.
Like traditional braces, you’ll come in every four to five weeks to have the arch wires adjusted and tightened. Treatment time can range as short as four months to as long as nine months, but this is determined on a case-by-case basis. Like traditional braces, you’ll need to wear a retainer afterwards to prevent your teeth from shifting back.
The two biggest differences between Six Month Smiles in Framingham and traditional braces is the treatment time and issues they solve. Six Month Smiles may take far less time to complete, however, they are not recommended for patients trying to fix complex bite problems or severe misalignment. They are mainly intended for correcting anterior spacing and alignment issues that affect spacing.
With these differences in mind, you’ll want to confirm your goals with your dentist before starting any treatment. To get started, schedule a consultation with them today!
