CEREC ‘Same Day Crowns’: Blog#1

February 18, 2013

CEREC ‘Same Day Crowns’ have been available at Framingham Family Dental Care for over a year. While this technology has been in development for at least 20 years, I was attracted to this ‘new’ technique by the vast improvements CEREC has made recently to their product, particularly in the wide range of new materials that the CEREC system has available to create beautiful, strong, and natural looking dental restorations.
So, why choose CEREC over traditional crowns? In the past, crowns were either made from porcelain baked onto metal or were made entirely of metal. To understand the benefits of CEREC, we need to know a little about these older crown techniques. Dentists have long talked about the ‘Gold Standard’. For centuries gold restorations were universally acknowledged to be the best for strength and longevity. The gold was cast in one piece so it never broke and was mixed with other metals to have the same attrition (wear) rate as natural tooth structure. However, while a few cultural groups have linked gold with wealth, most affluent societies wanted white, natural looking teeth. Hence, in the past fifty years or so, dentists started using all porcelain or porcelain over metal for crowns. Unfortunately, all porcelain usually proved to be too fragile, and porcelain over metal often creates an unappealing black line at the base of the crown.
Enter CEREC and the materials it uses. CEREC uses pre-manufactured blocks of ceramic that are formulated for durability and wear so they are as strong as metal and look and feel like your own teeth. And the CEREC technique has the ability to color-match the ceramic to create the most attractive and natural looking teeth imaginable.
CEREC crowns and restorations provide a huge improvement over previous techniques! But that is not all! I will get into “Why CEREC?” more in the next blog. Stay tuned!

Medical History at the Dentist??

January 9, 2013

When you come to the dentist’s office, one of the first things we ask you to
do is to fill out a Medical History Form.  Why is this important?  There are
many conditions and medications that can affect your dental care.  While
they might not seem significant or relevant to you, it is essential that you
advise us of any health issues you might have or medication you are taking.
The dentist is a key member of your personal medical team.  We ask that you
be open about your health history so that we can give you the best, safest,
and most effective dental treatment for your personal needs!

What is Cosmetic Dentistry?

September 8, 2012

I consider myself to be a ‘cosmetic dentist’. For that matter, many of my colleagues actually advertise that they are ‘cosmetic dentists’. But what does that mean?
To quote Wikipedia: “Cosmetic dentistry is generally used to refer to any dental work that improves the appearance (though not necessarily the function) of a person’s teeth, gums and/or bite. Many dentists refer to themselves as ‘cosmetic dentists’ regardless of their specific education, specialty, training, and experience in this field. This has been considered unethical with a predominant objective of marketing to patients. The American Dental Association does not recognize cosmetic dentistry as a formal specialty area of dentistry.
While Wikipedia may not be the ultimate source for accuracy on all subjects, the fact remains that cosmetic dentistry is NOT a specialty. Any dentist who pays the least attention to the appearance of your mouth and smile is practicing cosmetic dentistry.
Having said all this, I consider Framingham Family Dental Care to be a practice that offers a cosmetic approach to dentistry for all its patients. While our primary goal is to ensure the dental health of our patients, my staff and I are dedicated to various procedures that enhance the beauty of your smile! Some of these include veneers, crowns, tooth-colored fillings, teeth whitening, and other smile enhancement procedures.

Mouthguards

August 16, 2012

Most families understand the need for Sport Mouth Guards when their children are participating in contact sports. Few patients, however, understand the need for Mouth Guards when they grind or clench their teeth or have TMJ.
Studies have shown that up to 38% of the adult population in this country has abnormal wear to their teeth. A simple appliance worn at bedtime prevents this damage from occurring when you are asleep and least aware of clenching or grinding. Failure to stop this wearing down of the teeth causes many problems. Teeth become flattened, exposed dentin creates sensitivity, and a “collapsed” bite changes your appearance, often making you look older. Repairing the damage once it has been done can be quite costly and complicated. Often full-mouth rehabilitation is necessary which could result in literally thousands of dollars of treatment.

Talk to me and my staff about whether or not a Mouth Guard might be appropriate for you. Our goal is to preserve your dental health in the simplest, most efficient, and least costly way possible.
