Dental implants are a high-tech solution for replacing missing teeth. With dental implants, you have a permanent fix that feels and functions nearly exactly like your natural tooth. If you have one or more missing teeth, it will help you make an informed decision if you’re familiar with the benefits of implants and the dental implant process with Drs. Arvi or Adelina Duka, and what you can expect.
Dental implants are a prosthetic solution that replaces a missing tooth using three components: a titanium post, an abutment, and a porcelain crown. The titanium post is implanted into your jawbone to replace the root of your missing tooth.
The first benefit people think of with a dental implant is that it restores your smile to its beautiful, natural-looking state. However, dental implants have many other benefits.
The first step in the dental implant process is your consultation with our dentists. At this time, the dental care team will conduct a thorough evaluation that includes CT scans and X-rays. These scans will help the dentist determine whether or not dental implants are right for you. Patients need to have sufficient jawbone density to qualify for implants.
Once our dentists determine your eligibility for implants, a titanium post will be placed in your jaw in a surgical procedure. Over three to six months, the post will completely fuse with the jawbone to become a part of your jaw’s natural structure. This process is called osseointegration.
Once the implant has integrated and healed, an abutment is placed atop the screw. A porcelain crown will be placed over the abutment, the part of your implant tooth that shows above the gum line.
Most adults with missing teeth can get dental implants, but a few requirements exist. If you have gum disease, this must be corrected before the implant process can begin. Most importantly, you need to have enough density in your jawbone. Without enough bone density, the jaw can’t support the implant.
If you don’t have enough jawbone for implants, some options can help. One common technique is bone grafting. This technique adds synthetic or donor bone material to the bone in the jaw to reinforce it. This bone material integrates with your natural bone over time to create a foundation strong enough to support the implant.
