5 New Year’s Resolutions for a Healthy Smile

Over the holidays, you spent a lot of quality time with friends and family. While looking through all the photos you took on your phone, you realize that your smile isn’t as bright as it once was. Though all smiles have their unique quirks, many people that there are some things about their pearly whites that they want to change. New Year’s resolutions are the perfect way to do that. Read on for five New Year’s resolutions that will help you achieve the smile you desire over the next 365 days.

#1: Visit the Dentist

When was the last time you went to the dentist for a checkup and cleaning? If it’s been longer than six months, call them to schedule an appointment. Visiting the dentist twice per year is crucial to maintaining excellent oral health. During these visits, your dental hygienist will thoroughly clean your teeth to eliminate buildups of plaque and tartar. Next, your dentist will examine the oral cavity. If they come across any oral health issues, they will work with you to come up with a treatment plan. With early detection, common problems issues like cavities and gingivitis are easy to correct.

#2: Brush and Floss Better

When you wake up in the morning and before you go to bed at night, brush your teeth to remove plaque, bacteria, and food particles. You should also floss before bed to get rid of any debris that can’t be reached with brushing alone. This is a key part of keeping oral health issues like cavities, gum disease, and halitosis at bay.

#3: Brighten Your Smile

Are your teeth stained from years of drinking red wine, coffee, tea, and other highly pigmented beverages? If so, speak with your dentist about cosmetic treatments like teeth whitening and porcelain veneers to cover up or remove discoloration. Additionally, try to cut back on these beverages or drink them through a straw so they have less contact with your teeth.

#4: Conquer Dry Mouth

Gum disease, cavities, and increased plaque levels are just a few oral health issues that can be caused by dry mouth. Drink plenty of water to keep your mouth moist. You can also eat fresh fruits and veggies like apples and carrots, suck on sugar-free candy, or chew on sugar-free gum to increase saliva production.

#5: Cut Out Tobacco

Smoking drastically increases your chances of developing gum disease, oral cancer, and several other cancers. Cut cigarettes and other tobacco products out of your life for a healthier mouth and body. Additionally, if you need help quitting, ask your doctor, dentist, or therapist for resources.
